A Little Garden Flower

A little garden flower
Is lying in its bed.
A warm Spring sun
Is shining overhead.
Down came the raindrops
Dancing to and fro -
The little flower wakens
And then begins to grow.

May Updates

What a difference a couple weeks makes! Erik is recovering well, I am glad we made the choice we did - he has a ways to go but should be right as rain soon. With that, we will be rescheduling all workshops and will have the information available shortly.  Our vision has changed.

I took the time off to really decide what we wanted to bring families and how we wanted to bring it.  While I love large conferences, I always leave wondering about the families that I was there with, occasionally I make friends with someone here or there, but often I leave without having the time to really get to know anyone.  It got me thinking about community and how Erik and I can be a part of building up homeschooling communities.  We have spoken with some of our teachers and they agree and feel the same.  So with that, we are going to limit our conferences to much, much smaller sizes so families can take the time to get to know each other and really fellowship one another on this journey.  We will be working to make our conferences more retreat like, sharing meals, getting to know one another as well as our teachers, making connections - lasting relationships.  Sharing the Spirit of Waldorf with one another. Stay tuned, we should have all the conferences rescheduled shortly.

Needle Felting Fun  is our silly but informative video on needle felting - it is also included in our Before the Journey book set on the DVDs. If you would like to download it or purchase a DVD copy, please visit our store.

Some peeks at what we'll be offering this summer, fall, & winter:

  • Grade 6 - we are working on this now and will have a book list and a lesson schedule available shortly. We are working on what it will cost but rest assured it will be in line with our other products.
  • Full curriculum packages - we know your desire to save on shipping costs so we made it our priority to begin carrying more products.  We will be selling the Mercurius line to bring you wonderful Waldorf art supplies in package deals that you can feel good about.
  • A Journey through Waldorf Math - we love, love, love Harrer's book "Math Lessons for Elementary Grades" but we hear parents being frustrated about how to use this book to really serve them.  If you aren't used to the Waldorf way of doing math it can sometimes be a challenge, we are working to help with this challenge.  We are compiling a variety of lessons I have used to teach our children over the last few years and will be putting them together in a book with concrete lessons for grades 1 through 5, with some ideas for grade 6 as well.  For more in depth math in grade 6, we recommend "Making Math Meaningful Series" by Jamie York.
  • "A Journey through Waldorf Music" - this will be a small piece in print and will include a DVD on teaching recorder basics to moms so they can take it to their children!
  • Updated day planner - it has been about a year since we put out the first planner and we have listened to recommendations and suggestions from all of you and will be unveiling a new planner in the next month - better than that... we will be giving away some planners in our Back to School promotions beginning in June.
  • "Starting Your Journey" - this will be a free download for families new to Waldorf and/or homeschooling.
  •   "The Mushroom Doorway... Tales from the Gnomes" - we are obsessed you could say... these wee folk are so enchanting and I have been making up stories about them for years.  A taste of those stories can be found in our new book "Before the Journey" - this little book will focus on seasonal gnome stories.
  • Supplements for both LDS families and Pagan families - these will be available for free as downloads.
  • Updates and revisions - we will be re-editing all the books over the summer and adding some fun details to them where we can.  Grade 2 will be the first to get a real "once over" so we can include a container story that goes along with our other books.  The other books will get more expanded views of writing and language arts with Erik putting a lot of work into what you can expect from your child at each stage based on Waldorf guidelines.
  • More ideas to come! As Erik mends we'll be working in full force on these projects, join our mailing list to get updates on these projects as they come out.

We know the rest of the site is in serious need of updating... we are working on that this summer - stay up to date with new lesson ideas from our blog.  Keep checking back as we plan to tackle a different section of the site each week.

RADIO SHOW:  the show is growing and we appreciate everyone sticking with us as we make it all that it should be!  We will be back with our live shows soon, many more teachers and subjects to share.  Check out www.thegnomeshome.com - want to know what is playing right now?  Now you can listen from our blog too!

ERIK'S WRITING SERVICES: Do you sometimes feel like you are flying blind with knowing if your child is progressing in their writing?  Erik has a background in English, Journalism, and Film, he has worked as an editor and a newspaper reporter, and he lends his background to you! He can help you assess your child's writing and help you with the tools to move them forward becoming wonderful writers. For a full description of his services please visit the consulting section of our store.

The Virtuous Woman, this book is being written now and will not focus on homeschooling, its main focus is MOM. Moms of all paths often have a hard time remembering that they are the beacon for their family, we all want to be seen as the "Virtuous Woman" described in Proverbs 31:10 - no matter what our religious background (if you don't know the verse, I highly suggest reading it, it can be viewed here.)  Becoming this woman and living it for myself first and then my family is turning into my life's work.  I have had so much fun sharing this topic with others.  The book will contain meditations for all faiths.  We are all ONE. The book will be available late in 2008.
