Kindergarten:
A Journey Through
Waldorf Homeschooling: Kindergarten (available through me in
both print and ebook form. The ebook is a wonderful low cost
option to you while also reducing strain on our trees!
Bob and Nancy's also carries
my book in print form)
NOTHING is essential for kindergarten - that being said, if you choose
to work with your child at this age, these are the books I would
recommend.
By Susan Whitehead for the seasons (VH)
Lono & Coco Boato (autumn)
Silver Stork (winter)
Snowdrop and Ulba Bulba (spring)
Fire Flower Flamers (summer)
By Wynstones Press also for the seasons (VH)
Autumn
Winter
Spring
Summer
Gateways (H)
Spindrift (H)
Circle Round: Raising Children in Goddess Traditions by
Anne Hill, Starhawk, and Diane Baker (H - helpful for some multicultural
festival ideas - not available through Bob & Nancy's, but through larger
book sellers)
Festivals, Family, and Food by Diane Carey and Judy
Large (H)
Painting with Children by Brunhild Muller (H - not a must
but it can be helpful)
The following are just fun to have on the shelf if it can fit in your
budget:
In the Light of a Child by Michael Hedley Burton (I love
this for my own meditations)
Echoes of a Dream by Susan Smith
Seven Times the Sun by Shea Darian
Sing a Song of Seasons by Mary Thienes-Schunemann
(great book for seasonal songs - with CD! if you need song ideas, this
is a good choice)

Fenner and Karen L. Rivers (this has some great read aloud ideas for
kindergarten as well as book suggestions through the years.) |
Grade One:
A Journey
Through Waldorf Homeschooling: Grade One available
through me in both print and in ebook form.
(available now) Bob and Nancy's
will be carrying the print version in April 2007.
A Path of Discovery: Volume One: Grade One by Eric
Fairman (a great series of books, while he does not give lesson plans as
my books do, he gives a lot of background information. He is a
Waldorf teacher and these guides were originally meant for other
teachers. Most of his work translates well into the home. (VH)
Math Lessons for Elementary Grades by Dorothy Harrer
(VH - no essential! This is a fabulous book for teaching math!)
A Journey in Time through Verse and Rhyme by Heather
Thomas (VH - I love this book, it is filled with great little bits of
verse and poetry, a wonderful source for copywork when needed for all
the lower grades)
LMNOP and All the Letters A to Z by Howard Schrager
and Bruce Bischof (VH - this is a beautifully done book with wonderful
little poems and great pictures for all the letters of the alphabet,
very inspiring. I have used it at times when my own creativity was
low and I needed a boost and a shot of ideas on what I could draw for a
particular letter.)
The Wise Enchanter: A Journey Through the Alphabet by
Shelley Davidow (H - many parents like this book as a family read aloud
during grade one after the introduction of letters, it can help
reinforce them)
Painting with Children by Brunhild Muller (H - not a must
but it can be helpful)
A First Book of Knitting for Children by Bonnie Gosse and
Jill Allerton (H - full of easy knitting projects)
There are many, many other books that are a treasure for this and all
the grades, including anything by Alan Whitehead, Barbara Dewey and
Eugene Schwartz to name a few. I only list the ones that I
directly refer to - building a library at home of Waldorf books is a
task that can take many years to accomplish so take it slow, budget your
dollars and be meditative about which books are right for you and your
family.

I also recommend the
following resources for teaching the Norse myth, man/animal studies, and
local U.S. geography, they have wonderful lively pictures that your
child at this age will enjoy, many are available at your public library
or via interlibrary loan:
- D’Aulaires’
Book of Norse Myths by Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire (great
visual resource) (H)
- D’Aulaire’ Book
of Animals by Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire (another great
visual resource) (H)
- Tree of Life:
The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth by Rochelle Strauss
and Margot Thompson (will also be used in grade five) (VH)
- The United
States of America: A State-by-State Guide by Millie Miller and
Cyndi Nelson (H)
- Passport to
Your National Parks – this is a passport book put out by Eastern
National, they are the company that provides educational resources
for the national parks in the US. The ISBN is #1-888213-22-1 and
information can be obtained from their website at
www.eParks.com – this is a great resource for geography of the
United States. (H - this can be so much fun!!)
For art
instruction this year:
- Coloring with
Block Crayons by Sieglinde de Francesca (VH)
- Painting in
Waldorf Education by Dick Bruin and Attie Lichthart (VH)
- Drawing from
the Book of Nature by Dennis Klocek (VH)
Some good reader, read
aloud books, and read alone chapter books for this year, depending on
your child’s reading level and ability – many of these are available at
your local library as well (forgive me as I am sure to leave a few
out!):
- Thorkill of
Iceland: Viking Hero Tales and The Dream of King Alfdan by
Isabel Wyatt (both books are in one volume under the title
Thorkill of Iceland) (H)
- The Children of
Odin by Padraic Colum (VH - included in my book)
- Sun So Hot I
Froze to Death by Arthur M. Pittis (H)
- Thor's Wedding Day: By Thialfi, the goat
boy as told to and translated by Bruce Coville (H find at
library)
- Favorite Norse Myths by Mary Pope
Osborne (H library)
- The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer
(advanced chapter book H)
- Thor comics by Marvel. I would suggest Mom or
Dad read these first, Dad probably already read them but would enjoy
reading them again! Make sure that the material meets your
standards of what you want your child to read for fun. If they
don’t then simply skip them in favor of other books on the subject.
